Kitchen Tip: Don’t Leave a Cast Iron Skillet Filled With Water
October 20, 2008
So I made eggs on Saturday morning for breakfast in my cast iron skillet (not enameled). When washing it some of the residual egg was difficult to remove, so I decided to leave some water in the bottom of the skillet to loosen the egg. I filled it up with just a quarter to half inch of water and left it on the stove.
Unfortunately this was a bad idea, and on top of that, I forgot about it until Sunday morning. By Sunday the whole bottom of the skillet was a rusty red. After some washing and scrubbing all the rust was removed – so it wasn’t a disaster – but I lost the patina (the seasoning/oil layer) on the skillet, so I’ll have to season it again soon.
Don’t leave your cast iron skillet wet or it will rust – quickly.

At least you didn’t leave it simmering on the stove for 24 hours!

I have rusted many a cast iron skillet, now I put them on low heat on the stove to dry after I wash them.

Glad to know I’m not the only one!

This is totally something I would do. Once, I was scrubbing a potato with a vegetable brush and it flew out of my hand into a bowl I had sitting in the sink, splitting it into 2 even halves!
I hope you bought yourself a nice new skillet!

I have 2 skillets, one has a very black patina, feels and cooks like teflon. but isnt. and i protect it like it is irreplaceable.
skillet number 2 has some rust. but i would like to put a patina on it like my skillet number 1.
what would you suggest?
